Somewhere behind the peas is the soup you made for a busy night. Tonight would be a good night for it, if you could remember which container it went into and whether there’s enough for two.
Most food goes into the freezer with a perfectly good plan. The extra sauce will save cooking next week. The bread is for lunches. Those plans become harder to remember once everything is packed into similar-looking containers.
A little organisation can bring them back. The useful question is what would help you choose dinner from the food you’ve already put away. QR Pantry gives you somewhere to keep those details, so the answer doesn’t depend on remembering a particular Sunday afternoon.

A place for the meals you’ve already made
A basket of prepared meals offers a different kind of help from a drawer of raw ingredients. Soup may need reheating and bread; raw chicken still needs a recipe and cooking. Keeping those foods in recognisable groups makes the freezer easier to read, even before you open an app.
There doesn’t have to be a grand reorganisation. One drawer is a manageable place to begin, working with food you can identify and whose history you know. Food should stay frozen as you organise it. An unknown container isn’t something to thaw just to identify it or decide whether to eat it, and a newly guessed date won’t resolve an uncertain history.
The arrangement only needs to be easy enough to maintain when you’re putting the next shop away. If the prepared meals have an obvious home, they’re more likely to come to mind on the evening you need one.
The few details that make dinner possible
‘Pumpkin soup, two serves, add bread’ tells a small but useful story. It says what you have, who it will feed and what’s still needed. ‘Soup’ leaves most of that work to memory.
A suitable QR Pantry label connects the container to those saved details. Scanning a fresh label and adding its contents works on Free. Separate containers can have separate records, which means eating one portion doesn’t make the others disappear from your list. The serves matter too: one container might hold dinner for two.
Location is part of that story. ‘Garage freezer, upper basket’ saves a trip through the kitchen drawers. In QR Pantry, the appliance has its own space, with Kind set to Freezer; the basket detail can live in the notes. The app needs that Freezer setting as well as a recognisable name.
The history worth keeping
When the soup was cooked and when it went into the freezer are both useful details. For packaged food, the original printed date and freezing directions matter too. QR Pantry’s date control lets you match the packet’s Use by or Best before wording. FSANZ explains that the first concerns safety and the second quality. Freezing decisions still need to follow the food’s directions and actual history.
The saved item’s Freezer clock is where you record when it went in. A new item saved directly to a freezer space doesn’t automatically have that freezing date recorded. Any suggested storage date needs reviewing; an app estimate isn’t a manufacturer-issued safety date.
The freezer itself needs attention as well. The NSW Food Authority recommends -18°C or below. A saved record can help you remember food, but it can’t tell you the appliance’s temperature.
The evening the freezer earns its space
Before the next shop is a good moment to look through your saved freezer food. That is when the soup can become Tuesday’s dinner and the shopping list can include bread, instead of ingredients for another whole meal. A cooked sauce may need pasta; a raw ingredient needs a little more planning. Our meal-planning article explores those choices.
Preparation belongs in that decision. Some foods cook from frozen, while others need time to thaw. NSW Government guidance recommends thawing in the fridge or microwave, rather than on the bench, with the food’s own directions guiding its preparation.
When the soup moves to the fridge, its existing record should move with it. In QR Pantry, moving it out of a freezer space records the change in frozen status; any resulting date still needs checking against its handling and directions. After dinner, marking the container Used up keeps the remaining list accurate.
The soup has finally done the job you saved it for. On a busy evening, dinner began with cooking you’d already done.
